Palace of Knossos
The Minoan Palace of Knossos located 5 km southeast of Heraklion, in the valley of the river Kairatos. The river originates from Archanes, crosses Knossos and empties into Katsambas, the Minoan port of Knossos. In Minoan era, the river was had water all year round and the surrounding hills were covered with oaks and cypresses.

Palace of Malia
The palace of Malia was built around the same period as Knossos, Phaistos and Zakros, with the same architectural design and the same fate of growth and decline. It was a two-store palace with many warehouses, workshops and craft spaces. In the archaeological museum of Heraklion are today the big stone coin with the 34 rounded circular cavities, the golden bee jewelry and the marble sarcophagus with the reliefs. Some archaeological finds are also found in the museum of Agios Nikolaos.

Palace of Festos
Phaistos was one of the most important cities in Crete, built on a hill in the western part of Mesara plain. The palace of Phaistos was destroyed twice by an earthquake. The architecture of the palace was influenced by the other palaces of Crete. From the excavations of the palace were discovered vessels and objects of Minoan, Geometric and Hellenistic period. The Palace of Festos is located 62.5 km southwest of Heraklion and is easily accessible from Heraklion with regular bus services KTEL.

Ancient city of Gortyn
Gortyn was developed in the fertile plain of Messara. The city was decorated with temples, theaters, statues, warm baths and other wonderful buildings. The city was destroyed by the Saracins in 824 AD. The monuments one can visit is the odeon and the great inscription, the northern theater, the acropolis, the temple of Saint Titus, the Pythian temple, the temple of the Egyptian deities, the Nymphaeus, the Amphitheater, the Great Porta, the Hippodrome, the city cemetery, the Early Christian triconch and the tombs of Agioi Deka.
